Week 12/52 – OPW Challenge 2024

I went to another wedding (actually, I officiated it!) during the week of March 17-23. It’s been a busy month, busy year really, and so I’m writing and sharing this review a bit later than I would have liked, but I’m still proud of myself for making it all the way through March and still keeping up with this blog.

Album: Son by Four (2000) by Son by Four

My Thoughts:

Most of the time when I listen to my music on Spotify, if I’m not listening to a particular artist or album, I tend to listen to all my liked songs on shuffle. I do have playlists that I listen to from time to time, but I like throwing on all my liked songs and rediscovering old favorites. Recently, “A Puro Dolor” by Son by Four came on while listening to my music on shuffle. It’s such a power ballad that makes me feel nostalgic for when I used to live in Mexico as a child. I didn’t grow up in a household that watched telenovelas, but this song very much feels like it could be the intro song for a telenovela. Actually, after doing a tiny bit of research, it does seem that it was the theme song for at least two telenovelas: Frente al Espejo and Mis 3 Hermanas (“A Puro Dolor,” 2024). In fact, this song was so popular that it was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Tropical Song during the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards. Son by Four even performed a medley of “A Puro Dolor”/”Purest of Pain” with “This I Promise You”/”Yo Te Voy a Amar” along with NSYNC (“A Puro Dolor,” 2024).

You can watch the video below if you’re curious and want to hear Justin Timberlake singing in Spanish:

After rediscovering “A Puro Dolor,” I was curious to listen to the bands other songs, and so I decided to listen to their eponymous album. Sadly, the album was not exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting more love ballads, but this album is absolutely a salsa album. Actually, the first song on the album is the salsa version of “A Puro Dolor.” Salsa music is great, but I guess it’s not something I would gravitate to on a regular basis. I think it’s something that one might listen to more socially and that is meant for dancing.

Nowadays, Son by Four has shifted toward making Catholic music (“Son by Four,” 2023). I probably won’t be revisiting Son by Four’s salsa music, but I’m actually kind of curious to listen to some of their religious music and to see if I think my mom or family would like it. Also, if anyone else can recommend an artist that gives off “A Puro Dolor” vibes, please do! I’m craving more ballads!

My Rating:

It’s ok, but not for me.
